Discontinuity Layout Optimization (DLO) (Smith and Gilbert, 2007) isa novel geotechnical stability analysis method which is based on thekinematic (upper bound) limit theorem of plasticity. The method is wellsuited to the development of general-purpose software and is simple toapply in practice, making it an attractive option to competing techniques.Recently, Crumpton (2018) developed an adaptive extension for theDLO method (ADLO) which improves computational efficiencythrough enhancements to the core solution procedure and the use ofautomatic mesh refinement. This paper demonstrates the performance ofADLO by applying the method to estimate the bearing capacity of arough rigid footing on sand overlying clay.
