Propane-Air plants are one of several tools used by the natural gas industry to manage load swings on the natural gas delivery system. During high natural gas consumption periods, propane, together with an appropriate amount of diluting air, can be injected into the natural gas distribution system to supplement energy flow to consumers. Propane-Air systems allow for the avoidance of on-going demand charges associated with firm pipeline supply contracts, replacing it with a more economical fixed asset. These systems provide additional benefit by providing backup gas supply with localized on-site storage, providing uninterrupted operation security to critical infrastructure in case of an interruption to supply of natural gas. Propane-Air is not a new technology. In fact, several plants have been in existence for over 50 years. However, that doesn't mean that innovation isn't happening in the industry. Clean burning and adaptable Propane-Air can be combined with renewable energy technology to create a peak shaving or energy storage plant that is carbon neutral and sustainable.
