Earthen architecture in its many variants and different techniques (i.e. adobe, rammed earth, wattleand daub) has been undoubtedly present for centuries in different buildings scattered throughout theIberian Peninsula. Nevertheless, despite their wide diffusion, environmental adaptation and high levelof conservation, these constructive techniques are practically unknown to students of architectureschools. Within the framework of the UNESCO Spanish Chair of “Earthen architecture, buildingcultures and sustainable development” the authors of this paper have carried out a series ofeducational activities to disseminate scientific and technical know-how of earthen architecture. Theaims of all these actions, using a wide range of communicative and didactic approaches, have focusedon training programmes both for the university community ( UPV- Valencia-Spain) and forinfant/primary schools. During the last academic year (2013-2014) the activities carried out atuniversity level (School of Architecture/UPV) were developed in two parallel lines. On the one hand, acycle of monthly conferences was organized promoting learning of earthen constructive techniquesand preservation projects through participatory methodology and active learning. In addition, the Chairoffered three workshops in which students could experience and learn different earthen constructivetechniques, mainly adobe and rammed earth options, thanks to hands-on activities. A final workshop,focused on the “real” development of a school project built with earth rounded off this methodology.Last but not least, at non-university level, other workshops have been developed, helping children tounderstand earth and its potential as a construction material, through didactic play adapted to schoollevels.
