In recent decades educational discourse has not deeply examined the patterns and effects ofenvironmental consumption of the global north which has become a threat to human lives anddevelopment. Despite global environmental summits, the high income countries persist in deleteriousactivities which taint the environment and have inimical effects to human existence with numerousaccompanied implications such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, industrial pollution, gaseousemission etc.Today sustainability is fore in the global development agenda, yet its drive and objectives have notpermeated the lifestyles of high income countries. Unsustainable environmental consumption remainspervasive and a central challenge. Our environment is tainted, by unsustainable activities of the highincome countries.This paper seeks to explore the place of environmental education in policy framings. It argues thatenvironmental education has a role to play in checking deleterious environmental activities andbringing green environment back on track.The paper identifies salient challenges and negative effects which accompanies this anomaly such astsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes, floods and hurricanes.Within the development perspective, it identifies global north/south dichotomy, poverty andvulnerability in the developing countries. It contends that sustainable development will not be attainedwith unsustainable environmental consumption rather urges environmental education to assertrelevance to redirect these vices, as it interrogates policy framings, using a political ecology approachas a methodology.
