Nano-Coating of Metronidazole on Dental Implants for Antibacterial Application

Nano-coating on dental implants for antibacterial applications was studied for the inhibition of Porphyromonas gingivalis biofilm formation. In this work, metronidazole, an antibacterial agent, was loaded in niosomes and coated on dental implants using layer-by-layer dip coating technique with poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Drug loaded niosomes was fabricated via thin film hydration method. The niosomes was coated by varying the dipping cycle. The dental implants were coated for 90 cycles and were characterized further to determine drug loading content, release profile and inhibition zone. In detail, average drug loading content was 22.85 ± 1.56 μg. Antibacterial study showed that Metronidazole release could inhibit bacteria. Therefore, the result suggested that the layer-by-layer dip coating on dental implants for antibacterial application could be potentially elevated by using niosomes.
