Shear strength of steel fibre reinforced prestressed concrete beam

This paper presents experimental results on fully prestressed steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams without stirrups under shear loading. In total, 13 beam specimens were tested with shear span to effective depth ratio (a/d) of 1.5 and 2 allowing 26 shear failures. Specimens contained either 0.5 percent or 1.2 percent volume fraction of hooked Bakaert steel fibres. It was found that the shear strength provided by the addition of 0.5 percent of fibres was similar to that calculated for the minimum shear reinforcement given by the Australian Standard AS 3600. The BS 8110 and ACI 318 formulae modified by Narayanan & Darwish (1987) for SFRC beams were used to calculate the ultimate shear capacity of the test specimens. It was found that the prediction of ultimate shear capacity of the test specimens by the BS 8110 method with modifications by Narayanan & Darwish (1987) was the closest to the test results among these two methods.
