Measurement of alpha particle concentrations in different chips samples from Iraqi market

This study was conducted to evaluate the concentration of alpha particles in eighteen different brands of chips collected from Iraqi markets. The nuclear track detectors CR-39 and 500 μm were used to determine the concentrations of alpha particles emitted from samples. The effective radium content varied from (0.042-0.218) Bq/kg, and at an average (0.112) Bq/ kg. Estimations of mass exhalation rates of radon differ of (7.611-39.581) mBq/kg.d, with a mean value 20.423 mBq/kg.d, whilst the surface exhalation rates of the radon differ from (95.72-497.747) mBq/m2.d, with a mean value of 257.000 mBq/m2.d. The concentration of uranium in these samples has been found, it is change from (0.036 - 0.187) ppm, with an average (0.096) ppm. An excellent relationship was observed between the effective radium content and the uranium concentration in the chips samples. Estimation of radium content and concentration of uranium in the chips samples is important from the perspective of ensuring health, so periodic studies of radiological activity should be done using a variety of methods and techniques for the purpose of limiting the effects of radiation. The concentration of alpha particles in this study does not pose a danger to people's health and is within the limits allowed internationally.
