Tensile Behavior of Silver Date Palm Leaf Reinforced Polyester Composites

In the current study, a lightweight composite material has been fabricated using silver date palm tree leaf fiber as reinforcement in polyester resin matrix. The fibers are extracted using retting and manual process. The density of the fiber is found to be 500 kg/m~3. The composites have been fabricated up to a maximum volume fraction of about 0.58. The tensile properties of the composites were investigated as a function of fiber content. It has been observed that the tensile strength of the composite increases with an increase in fiber content up to 0.41 volume fraction and decreases with an increase in volume fraction of the fiber. It is found that the maximum tensile strength of the composite is 200.5 MPa for the volume fraction 0.41 which is about 1.67 times greater than that of plain polyester resin. These results show that there could exist a solid goring bond between the fiber and resin at a volume fraction of 0.41. It has been concluded that using silver date palm fiber as reinforcement in plain polyester resin plays a major role in terms of high tensile strength of a new fabricated composite material.
