Powder metal methods are widely used for manufacturing valve seats for automobile engines. Whereas valve seats are lubricated by engine oil leaked in modest amounts from piston rings, ensuring wear resistance can be a challenge for eco-friendly engines that extremely reduce oil consumption. To improve the wear resistance of valve seats, we introduced a method of oxidizing the seat surface before use to form a hard oxide layer. This resulted in an improvement of wear resistance by twice or more. We also found that rotating the valve at slow speed resulted in a uniform contact between the valve and seat and improved wear resistance.
