Rupe Rearrangement Studies in Liquid Sulfur Dioxide

Copper(II) and indium(III) trifiate catalyzes the Rupe rearrangement of propargylic alcohols in liquid sulfur dioxide as the reaction medium. 1-Ethynylcyclohexanol and 1-(phenylethynyl)cyclohexan-l-ol were used as model substrates, and the expected l-(cyclohex-l-en-l-yl)ethanone and l-(cyclohex-l-en-l-yl)-2-phenylethanone were obtained in average yields.
