摘要

In the mid 1950's, new facilities for nuclear research studies were constructed at Winfrith Heath in Dorset by the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, (UKAEA). Amongst these facilities, Building A59 at Winfrith still contains two large concrete shielded suites of facilities (caves) that were used for many years for the post-irradiation examination (PIE) of nuclear fuels and other active reactor components. The facilities were extremely contaminated at the time that they were declared redundant in the late 1990's and RWE NUKEM Limited was awarded the contract to decontaminate, decommission and demolish them. This is in support of UKAEA's mission, which is to carry out environmental restoration of its nuclear sites and to put them to alternative uses wherever possible.
