Continuous real-time information on leaching solutions is critical to understand both point source and non-point source impacts. For this purpose, CSIRO has developed novel sensor technologies capable of providing the missing link to closed loop feedback control systems for mineral leaching processes. Robust, sensitive chemical sensors have been developed to make continuous, periodic or event-driven measurements without the need for frequent human intervention into this process which is taking place under extreme conditions. The sensor technologies, developed in the course of studying the fundamentals of (bio) leaching mechanisms, have been identified as having novel capability of significant commercial interest to major ore processing operations. The sensors for use in both saturated and semi-saturated conditions are capable of measuring Eh, pH, temperature, and concentrations of metallic elements in solution (cupric, ferrous and ferric ions).
