Process Mass Spectrometers (MS) have been used for precise monitoring of airborne VOCs at many refinery and petrochemical facilities over recent years; the ability to measure a wide range of compounds in multiple streams with short cycle times has proven to be a reliable analytical solution. This paper will describe how MS has also been applied to the online analysis of VOCs in water samples. Important aspects of hardware and software required to provide a highly selective measurement, as well as the technique for adapting the MS sample system, are discussed.
