An analysis of the current state and prospects of the hydropower development of Ukraine is made, which testifies to the important role of small hydropower in providing power reserve of power systems. Using a multi-layered artificial neural network, the prediction of the electric network load was performed. Control impacts are defined to provide power output in order to meet the needs of the load in the EPS at peak times. For the practical implementation of certain control effects, a structural scheme of an automated control system for the operation of small hydropower plants for the issuance of optimal power during the coverage of the loading schedule of the power system at peak times has been developed. This system is a centralized system of operational management, executed on a hierarchical principle. This will allow the best way to take into account the feature of the structure and interconnection of individual elements of the power system, as well as the nature of the processes in it. The estimation of the economic efficiency of using small hydroelectric power stations for the regulation of power output in order to meet the requirements of the load of the power system at peak times using the automated control system of the operating modes of the MES and the prediction of short-term load using an artificial neural network.
