This paper presents the system design of a real-time underground mine environment monitoring and warning system using FPGA. This system detects the presence of harmful and toxic gases like Methane (CH_4) and Carbon monoxide (CO) and generates a proper warning. Verilog HDL is used to develop the design in FPGA. The main aim of the system is to read the data from the gas sensor interfaced to the FPGA board, compare with the pre-set threshold based on gas information and generate the warning signal. The final observation is that the designed system on FPGA board is very reliable and effective, thus ensuring the safety of underground mine workers. Vivado 2015.2 software is used for designing and implementing the system in Nexys 4 Artix 7 FPGA board along with other electronic components. The main advantage of this system design is that it offers precise detection of harmful and toxic gases and gives a fast response in the form of warning using sound and light.
