We have used augmented reality (AR) technology to develop a system designed to support network element replacement work. In particular we focused on the replacement work of packages (PKGs) in transmission equipment. We clarify issues related to current PKG replacement work and describe the requirements that must be met if we are to improve this work. A prototype system based on the requirements is presented. The system consists of a tablet computer with a camera and an acceleration sensor, and a specific marker that is used for displaying AR graphics. Software related to the AR technology runs on the tablet computer. The system employs a marker-based AR technology to provide work support functions. The functions are designed to indicate PKG positions with AR graphics in a real-time video image, confirm the correctness of a PKG identified by field technicians and archive pictures of confirmation results as evidence of correctly undertaken work. We also describe the improved replacement work procedure with the proposed system. Moreover, we demonstrate that the system can be simply applied to various types of network apparatus. Our work support system with AR technology is a promising tool for ensuring reliable connectivity over an entire network because the system is effective in supporting the correct operation of network elements.
