Optical fiber cable and connectivity for High Capacity Single- and Multi-Mode Optical Home Network

In this paper, we present the realization of a hybrid cable containing two HNOF (Home Network Optical Fiber) fibers as well as two copper pairs (one for POTS telephone and one for terminal powering). HNOF is able to be used like a multi-mode fiber when using 850 nm multi-mode sources, and ensure single-mode propagation when using single-mode sources operating at 1310 nm or 1550 nm. We also present the cable optical and installation characteristics, as well as newly developed in-field-installed connectivity solution. We also present first optical budget and transmission tests results obtained in both single mode and multimode operations and, moreover, with concatenated single-mode and HNOF trunks in a single-mode Home Network infrastructure including optical Add & Drop wavelength filters and a NxN splitter.
