Morphology of a Q-DC Discharge within a Fuel Injection Jet in a Supersonic Cross-Flow

This study is focused on the morphology of a Q-DC discharge generated in the fuel jet injected into supersonic M=2 flow. Tests were performed in the SBR-50 facility at the University of Notre Dame. It was found that the filamenary discharge follows the local flow structure and locates in the shear layer between the core flow and injected jet. The details of behavior were explored by means of two-dimensional imaging with subsequent image processing and three-dimensional reconstruction of the plasma filament structure. The discharge is specifically located in a mixing layer where the fuel-oxidizer ratio varies from 1:1 down to stoichiometric further downstream. It is also assumed that such a behavior of filamentary plasma promotes the fuel-air mixing.
