THE APPEARANCE OF PAINTINGS AND COLOUR CHARTS UNDER WHITE LEDS WITH HIGH COLOUR RENDERING

Recently, white LEDs have started to be introduced in the field of museum exhibits for low emission of UV rays and heat which are harmful for artworks. However, the spectral distribution of white LEDs is completely different from conventional museum lightings such as halogen lamps and the effect on the appearance of artworks are yet to be fully known. The purpose of our study is to examine the effects of white LEDs on the appearance of colour charts and paintings. We have conducted colour charts and painting assessment experiments in both France and Japan to consider cultural differences. Results show that halogen lamps could be replaced with the high colour rendering white LEDs and there are some differences in evaluation of paintings between France and Japan.
