Nowadays, vehicle reliability is becoming an ever more important core aspect of automotive engineering to anticipate the trends towards car sharing and autonomous driving. The flawless operation of vehicles for a defined mileage under given loading and environmental conditions is crucial for cost and safety reasons. There are well-established methodologies in durability engineering to assess component reliability under certain constraints such as mileage, load and environmental conditions in order to retrieve a Remaining Useful Lifetime estimation. These methods are based on damage accumulation without capturing real-life usage patterns and the actual environmental conditions a component is exposed to. Consequentially, automotive manufacturers and suppliers are forced to over-design their components in favor of making them more durable and fulfil the requirements.
