In this study, we propose a framework that can design the layout considering the relations between internal space and external shape in the initial design stage. In this framework, the internal layout was designed based on the ISA methodology used by the US Navy. Survivability elements were further defined to evaluate the internal layout. In order to represent the external shape, the external shape variables were identified and alternatives of the external shapes were created based on the variables. The internal layout and the external shape are repeatedly changed to create layout alternatives. Finally, the proposed design framework was applied to the DDG-1000 class ships.
