Submerged Arc Welding Process Productivity in Welding Thick High Strength Steel Plates Used for Arctic Applications

This paper describes the possibilities of using submerged arc welding (SAW) for joining thick high strength steel (HSS) plates, in addition the paper examines usability and define the boundaries of SAW used in Arctic applications. Finally, this paper presents standards requirements for Arctic applications, peculiarities of SAW process and its modifications and the influence of SAW process parameters on the weldments quality. The data is collected in a form of literature reviews and case study experiments. Typically, an increase in productivity can be gained by utilizing multiple wires, optimizing wire diameters, using flux cored consumables and careful welding process control, for instance with extended electrical stickout. Several case studies presented in this paper to illustrate the usability of these methods and verify theoretical ideas. Two case studies are describing welding E500TMCP steel and X70 steel. The results of the investigation show the usability of SAW process for joining thick HSS plates used in low temperatures, and provide practical welding parameters. The outcome of this study can be useful for both academic and industrial experts and organizations.
