OPEN SOURCE DEVELOPMENT MODEL FOR TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY: CASE STUDY DISTRICT DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

Software has revolutionized several fields and transportation industry is no exception. Advances in software algorithms and development have helped in maintaining transportation assets; optimize resources and more stream line incident response process. The development and procurement process of many software's in most of the department of transportation still follow older and proprietary model. This paper discusses the need for open source software development, its advantages for transportation agency. It discusses the steps necessary for this process i.e. creating online repository, developing standards. The paper discusses the non-traditional way in which private entities can support the implementation and maintenance of software which leads to more and more collaboration between different state and county department of transportation (DOT) and developing standard set of practices.
