Increasing concentrations of toxic metals in water bodies require a constant search for effective treatments to remove industrial waste.This work describes the removal of chromium ions from tannery effluent employing water hyacinth(Eichhornia crassipes)biochar.FTIR analysis of the in nature hyacinth(AGIN)and its biochar(BIO)revealed that the thermal treatment did not eliminate the principal chemical groups present in the in nature biomass.However,the treatment increased the surface area,with values of 93.48 m~2 g~(-1)for AGIN and 135.84 m~2 g~(-1)for BIO.The biochar exhibited fast adsorption kinetics,with 55% removal of chromium ions from tannery effluent in only 20 min.The adsorption processes reached equilibrium after around 40 min,with a final removal percentage higher than 81%(6.8 mg g~(-1)).
