An anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted to study the reductive dechlorination of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and the changes of microbial communities following the addition of dissolved organic matter (e.g. acetate) in the profile of a mangrove soil (0-100 cm depths). During 63 days of incubation, acetate was rapidly consumed by soil bacteria, and more than 90% of PCP was degraded in treatment of acetate+PCP. The dechlorinated products, 2,3,4,5-TeCP and 3,4,5-TCP, with the meta- and orth-position dechlorination positions, were found in the five soil layers. Compared with the changes in microbial community structures induced by PCP or by different depths of soil profile, the changes in community structure induced by the addition of acetate as a carbon source were significantly greater, especially for the gram-negative bacteria.
