IVECO Stralis LNG - Practical experience with Europe's first series production Liquified Natural Gas vehicle - Future developments of natural gas engines for heavy trucks

IVECO's monovalent natural gas (and biogas) engine with 8 liters displacement and up to 330 hp/1300 Nm is one of the few alternative engines that can economically compete with Diesel engines in heavy trucks. Born on customer initiative and not as a research project, more than 5000 units have been sold up till now. Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) as fuel storage alternative has now been established in series production. In a second step, ECE R110 homologation for vehicle registration all over Europe without limitations was introduced, implying some new technical solutions for safety and durability in LNG system. Further development steps are heading to reduce system cost, optimize vehicle configurations and to further increase engine output.
