Inject ion molding and hot melt extrusion are well developed plastic forming processes that have recently been garnering more attention in the pharmaceutical industry. The use of these thermal processing techniques reduces the need for hazardous solvents in order to create amorphous solid dispersions, which can improve the efficacy of poorly soluble drug compounds through increased solubility and bioavailability. This article describes the application of hot melt extrusion and injection molding to create pharmaceutical doses using clotrimazole in hydroxypropylcellulose.
