The Continuous Head Hardened Rail (CHHR) process was initially developed in the early 1980s at MMRA Rodange in cooperation with CRM Group to produce in-line head hardened rails (up to 400 Brinell) exhibiting a satisfactory combination of strength, toughness and weldability using conventional C-Mn steel grades. During the past decades, the initial CHHR system has been subjected to several technological evolutions, which have been implemented on the CHHR unit of ArcelorMittal Gijon plant since third quarter 2011 (Figure 1). ArcelorMittal Global R&D Asturias and CRM Group are continuously improving the control and the design of the rail head hardening process in order to meet the increasingly market requirements in terms of hardness level, rail profile and steel grade.
