The characterization of iron ores for the hot metal and sponge iron production is a main issue concerning to productivity and efficiency of iron and steelmaking processes. Both lumpy and fine iron carriers are used in direct and smelting reduction. For a better understanding of the reduction of fine iron ores and their behaviour in fluidized bed processes, a fluidized bed reactor is installed at the Chair of Ferrous Metallurgy / Montanuniversitaet Leoben. Moreover, a standardized reduction test was defined with process parameters deduced from the industrial FINEX~R process. Thus the reduction test is based on a multistage reduction process with a CO-rich reducing gas composition. Optionally, all gas compositions containing CO, CO_2, H_2, H_2O, CH_4 and N_2 can be realized by means of flow controlled gas mixing units. The objectives of the concerned work are the definition of a standardized methodology for the evaluation of fines in a fluidized bed reactor and the investigation of raw and reduced materials.
