A road tunnel is a closed special space. When a fire has broken out inside a tunnel, it is important to guarantee a safe evacuation environment. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to quickly detection the fire and to lead the start of evacuation as well as appropriately exhaust the smoke and control its diffusion according to the traffic condition. We will work on early detection of fires and understanding of smoke behavior in a diversifying freeway tunnel. In this paper, we will report on experiments for grasping the characteristics of the photodiode sensor in a full-scale tunnel for controlling smoke diffusion.
