The new Pajares Tunnel is a 24,667 m-long railway tunnel under construction in Spain. It will be on the AVE line from Valladolid to Gijon. Pajares tunnel's length of more than 18 miles in length, is the second longest railway tunnel in Spain, and the seventh longest in the world. This tunnel is dual-tube with a grade of 1,685%. Both tubes are connected by transverse interconnecting passages/galleries and/or technical rooms at every 400m. The traffic in the tunnel will be both passenger and freight trains. La Sagrera tunnel links the Sants station in Barcelona through the Eixample, with La Sagrera station. The tunnel passes under the streets of Provenca and Mallorca, using a short part of the Diagonal to link between these streets. In the Carrer de Mallorca, the tunnel passes directly in front of Gaudi's masterpiece, the basilica of the Sagrada Familia, and in the Carrer de Provenca, another Gaudi work, the Casa Mila. In a long campaign against this route, the Board of the Sagrada Familia and other parties argued that the tunnel would damage the church. In this discussion about different variant routes, the one now built was also called the Provenca tunnel because it passes for a part of its route under this street. SES methodology has been used for design of ventilation systems for both HSR tunnels.
