This paper describes the analysis and results of different types of insulation board; specifically investigating properties, balancing strength and thermal results in ladles for Steelmaking applications. The goal was to improve the safety lining life, determine the effect on shell temperatures and maintain the insulation board integrity throughout the ladle campaign. ArcelorMittal Dofasco (AMD) introduced insulation board into the steel ladle safety linings in 2010. This paper compares insulation board's strength, practical infrared temperature readings and board condition upon refractory tear-out of the safety linings. The report highlights the iterations undertaken to obtain a board that balances thermal properties and integrity to achieve AMD's goals. AMD relines safety linings with shotcrete once a year enabling this report to highlight the results and findings of insulation board for the past three years.
