Deviation of After-market Brake Discs with UN R90 Standard

Braking system relies on friction to bring a vehicle to a halt. One of friction materials in a typical automotive braking system is brake disc. Similar to other automotive parts, it also requires replacement. By scrutinizing samples that were randomly selected from the after-market, elemental analysis were carried out through Scanning Electron Microscope. Assessment of variability of brake disc quality with price was accordingly performed. Elemental composition of Silicon and Manganese were compared with an established international standard, UN R90. As result, significant deviation to the standard requirement was accordingly highlighted. With regard to the price offered, it is important to highlight that an effective after-market price controlling mechanism is extremely required. On the other hand, this comparative study could be utilised as a quality benchmarking and reference in implementing mandatory standard for brake discs, especially for Malaysian automotive after-market.
