A hybrid material with core-shell structure based on polymer photonic crystals (PPCs) core and magnetite particles shell (Fe3O4) was obtained. The optical properties of this material were investigated in the presence of an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid (H2SO4) confirming an unusual blue-shift of the photonic band-gap (PBG). The formation of ferric sulfate in the presence or organic phase under acid conditions led to the synthesis of an optical sensor with possible applications for acid rain investigations.
