Alcohol is the world's third largest risk factor for premature mortality, disability and loss of physical and mental health. Alcohol abuse is a major determinant for neuropsychiatric disorders. This article provides an overview and focuses on the neuropsychiatric sequelae of alcohol abuse including acute alcohol intoxication, withdrawal syndrome, delirium tremens, Wernicke's encephalopathy, Korsakoff's syndrome, alcohol withdrawal seizures, hepatic encephalopathy, alcoholic dementia, central pontine myelinolysis, Marchiafava- Bignami disease, cerebellar atrophy and peripheral neuropathy.
