We consider an adaptive domain based unstructured mesh parametrization for 3D velocity model and the related application of shape optimization in full waveform inversion (FWI). We generate the domain based unstructured tetrahe-dral mesh based on the surface or boundary information of velocity model obtained using level-set based segmentation and other techniques. Different from others, the domain based mesh provides explicit representations of surfaces and interior boundaries. Applications include shape optimization based approaches to seismic inverse problems. 3D velocity models are presented to validate the proposed method.
