FTTH network deployment is a huge investment for operators and communities. Return of investment is largely conditioned by the choice of the passive components. They should provide fast and efficient installation, long term reliability, low operation and maintenance cost while being able to cope with the next generations of active systems. To meet this challenge Orange has conducted numerous experiments and field trials. A complete range of passive components have been selected and specified. It notably relies on two building blocks, ITU-T G.657.A2 fibers and micromodules cables. ITU-T G.657.A2 fibers is the only type of fiber used from central office to the ONT. It is used in cables, in patchcords, in pigtails and in PON splitters. Micromodules technology has been selected whatever the optical fiber count, from 4 to the 720 optical fibers. In this paper the authors details the design of these products, their characteristics and their benefits for a future proof network.
