We explore and present the implementation of a novel statistical analysis method in tomographic image reconstruction from planar projections. The method, the Athens Model Independent Analysis Scheme (AMIAS), is based on statistical physics and uses Monte Carlo techniques in order to extract the parameters of a physical representation of the imaged object from the obtained data. The performance of the AMIAS implementation in image reconstruction is examined by reconstructing infrared planar images limited in number and characterized by strong medium absorption. The AMIAS reconstruction results are presented and compared to those derived from the well - known Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) and are shown to be superior.
