Steam reformers on synthesis gas plants are susceptible to over firing, especially during plant transient conditions, which can lead to catastrophic tube failure. In addition to the safety concerns, these tube failures result in extended downtime and cost to replace and install new reformer tubes. A proven technology used in other chemical industries has been utilized on steam reformers to allow for protection against such over firing incidents. In addition, the data collected can be used for more detailed catalyst monitoring. This paper reviews the benefits of the use of CatTrackers~R to measure in-tube process gas temperatures in steam reformers.
