Use of oral fluids for detection ofAscaris suum eggs

Infection with ascarids {Ascaris suum) impacts production performance (decreased gain, reduced feed conversion, liver condemnations, secondary respiratory disease) resulting in economic loss.1 The prevalence of internal parasites in swine can be quitehigh, particularly in finishing sites.2 Ante-mortem diagnosis of ascariasis in pigs has been limited to fecal flotation and serodiagnostics.3 Research studies have shown that oral fluids can be used to detect swine influenza virus, PRRSv, Mycoplasma hyo-pneumoniae, PCV2,4 andLawsonia intracellularis.'' The objective of this study was to determine if ascarid eggs could be detected in an oral fluid collection and how this method might compare to fecal flotation.
