Treatment regimens for drugs approved for use in swine are derived from pharmacokinetic (PK) studies completed on healthy pigs. There are few studies evaluating how disease impacts the pharmacokinetics of drugs and the implications for modifying treatment regimens, but these studies show significant changes in pharmacokinetic parameters as a consequence of either viral or bacterial infection.1 The objective of this study was a pharmacokinetic profile comparison of ceftiofur hydrochloride administeredintramuscularly (IM) at 5 mg/kg body weight in pigs coinfected with PRRSV and Streptococcus suis to the pharmacokinetic profile of clinically healthy pigs to determine the pharmacologic consequences.
