Many modern-day ice rink facilities in Canada are located in large community centers. These community centers run year-round and serve several purposes. In addition to ice rinks, many community centers have swimming pools, libraries, ftness centers, offce space and retail space. Based on the typical Canadian climate as well as the large area needing to be conditioned, these facilities have large heating requirements for both space heating and water heating. Refrigeration systems with heat reclaim capabilities appear to be the perfect solution for large community centers whereby utilizing the waste heat from the refrigeration system as a source of building heat will reduce both the carbon footprint and the operating cost to owners. However, to properly determine the impact of a heat-recovery refrigeration system in an ice rink, a study must be done which analyzes the heating requirements of the building, and then compares this against the heat available from the refrigeration system. Then, based on the cost of energy, a further analysis can be done to determine if an investment in energy effcient heat-recovery refrigeration system equipment is a good investment.
