Propatagium Injuries and Surgical Managementin Black Kites (Milvus migrans govinda)

Twenty black kites with comparable propatagial ligament lacerations were surgically repaired after injuries caused by glass-coated kite string. Seventeen animals healed sufficiently to be released and 3 animals died.The Indian city of Ahmedabad, Gujarat holds an International Kite Festival every January as part of celebrating Uttarayan (the end of winter and the arrival of spring). Festival participants use glass powder-coated string to try to cut opponents' stringsand bring down their kites. Unfortunately thousands of birds are killed or injured every year as a result of this event in Ahmedabad, alone.1 A local non-governmental organization (NGO), the Jivdaya Charitable Trust, admitted 3,147 injured birds duringthe month of January 2016, among them 441 black kites. The purpose of this case series is to report the success of surgical propatagial ligament repair in the black kite.
