The increasing use of high-order modulations and forward error-correcting coding leads to improved spectral efficiency on satellite communication links. Such improvements reduce signal satellite transponder bandwidth requirements and permit the consideration of multiple-carrier-per-transponder operation, an approach that offers increased efficiency to the network operator but introduces new challenges to maintaining acceptable signal quality. Nonlinear effects in the satellite channel can severely degrade multicarrier signal performance and weaknesses exist in current satellite channel linearization techniques. This paper will investigate the feasibility of adapting advanced digital predistortion techniques from the terrestrial communications field and applying them to the linearization of a multicarrier satellite communications system.
