Waste Heat Boilers (WHB) are very important components of the Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) for the recovery of the very useful byproduct of energy. In the past WHB generated low pressure steam but modern designs generate much higher steam pressure thus presenting mechanical design and operating challenges. As a result, WHB failures are becoming increasingly more common. The purpose of this paper is to identify the key design and operating considerations for the SRU WHB with the primary intention of raising the awareness of its importance.
