Polybenzimidazoles (PBIs) are a group of polymers that can be manufactured by condensation polymerization between a monomer with four amine groups, such as 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB), and one of several other suitable monomers, e.g., isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid), or diphenyl isophthalate and so on.1"3 The first purpose of this study is to develop cardo-polybenzimidazole (CPBI) copolymer containing cardo fluorene, with improved gas permeability, specifically oxygen permeability. Copolymers of monomer containing fluorene (having the cardo structure) and one of several other monomers were synthesized, and the effect of the ratio of the two monomers on gas permeability was determined by using a time-lag method.
