Diagnosis can be challenging because the symptoms of melioidosis mimic other common infections. PCR limited by poor sensitivity due to low levels of B. pseudomaliei in blood. Serological assays are rapid and fast, however up to 70% of population in endemic areas are seropositive. IFA can detect B. pseudomaliei cells on a side smeared with a patient sample, but sensitivity is low (66%). Our goal is to develop a rapid and inexpensive point-of-care test for the diagnosis of melioidosis.
