Need for an accurate and practical device for preliminary biological surveys and monitoring for both unfamiliar environments (military and first response) and existing ecosystems that can be threatened (agricultural infrastructure and indigenous human populations) With a low cost, portable detection device such as Firefly less time and effort can be spent in tracking the initial geographic spread of an invasive disease, particularly in resource limited areas, and increased focus can be placed in countermeasures at locations with greater predictability. With increased predictability of the spread of a particular pathogen, limited resources (such as vaccines, temporary medical facilities, and manpower) can be effectively deployed and distributed at the point of need. In addition, more effective pre-outbreak countermeasures can be initiated to limit the spread of disease.
