1D AND 2D MODELING OF RENNIES RIVER FOR HURRICANE IGOR

This study quantifies the flows in the Rennies River system generated from Hurricane Igor and analyzes the delineation of the floodplain from a 1D and a 2D perspective. XPSWMM was used as the modeling tool to perform the hydrologic and hydraulic analyses using surveyed river cross-sections and LiDAR. Comparison of the results for the two approaches indicated that 2D modeling provided a better representation of the observed areas of inundation during Hurricane Igor. It was determined that 1D modeling results were sensitive to the variation of topographic features within the floodplain. The model was calibrated based on flow monitoring stations along the river and field observations during the event. This research demonstrates the usage of 2D hydrodynamic modeling for floodplain delineation as an effective tool.
