CIE is a 100 year old technical,scientific and cultural non profit organisation.For those who are unfamiliar with CIE,a brief introduction is given of its origin and major achievements.Its current organisation and membership categories are outlined,as well as developments in its cooperation with partner organisations.Furthermore,an overview is given of the work programs of CIE and its Division 4 "Lighting and Signalling for Transport" in relation to automotive applications.Also,certain topics such as the consequences of the introduction of LED's,the growing population of the elderly and "Lighting Quality and Energy Efficiency" are highlighted in the context of current challenges,specifically the speed of technological developments against the required time for application research.Finally,the role of CIE is discussed and how to contribute.
